  • Starting therapy can feel daunting, and it’s natural to have questions. The process begins with a free 30-minute consultation call, where you can share what has been bringing you to therapy and get a sense of how we might work together.

If you decide to continue, we will arrange an initial 50-minute session to explore your concerns in more depth. Ongoing weekly sessions then provide a consistent space to reflect, process experiences, and develop greater understanding over time.

Therapy is a collaborative process, and we will work at a pace that feels manageable and supportive for you.

If you are new to therapy, or returning after some time, you may find the following information about how therapy works helpful.

Our Process

Consultation call

The consultation call is an informal conversation to explore what has been bringing you to therapy and whether working together feels like the right fit. It is a space to ask questions and get a sense of how I work, with no pressure to decide about continuing

First appointment

The first appointment marks the beginning of our therapeutic work together.

We will clarify confidentiality, boundaries and practical arrangements and then begin a more in-depth exploration of what has brought you to therapy and what you would like support with.

Continuing sessions

After the first session, therapy continues with regular, usually weekly sessions. This supports continuity in the work and helps develop a consistent therapeutic relationship.

Ending

Therapy can end when you feel ready. We will spend some time reflecting on the work we have done and consider what feels helpful for you moving forward.

Questions you might have before starting

  • These terms are often used interchangeably, and the differences can be difficult to define. Counselling is sometimes described as focusing more on specific difficulties, while psychotherapy may involve deeper exploration of patterns, experiences, and relationships over time.

In practice, “therapy” is often used as an umbrella term to describe the spectrum of counselling and psychotherapy.

My training and clinical experience enable me to offer a confidential and reflective therapeutic space that is responsive to each client’s individual experiences and needs.

  • It is not always possible to know straight away whether counselling or psychotherapy is the right step.

If you are unsure, you are welcome to book a free consultation call. This offers an opportunity to talk through what has been bringing you to therapy, ask any questions you may have, and consider whether working together feels like the right fit.

  • Many people have had therapy before without feeling it was helpful. Each experience is unique, and therapy can work differently depending on timing, your needs, and the approach of your therapist. Together, we can explore what hasn’t worked and create a supportive space tailored to you.

  • It can be difficult to know immediately whether a therapist is the right fit. What matters most is whether you feel comfortable enough to speak openly and whether the way I work feels supportive and helpful to you. The consultation call is an opportunity to get a sense of this.

  • Counselling can sometimes bring up thoughts or feelings that are difficult or unfamiliar. This is a normal part of the therapeutic process. If you feel unsettled, it can be helpful to talk about how you are experiencing the work together so we can move at a pace that feels manageable for you.

  • There is no fixed number of sessions required, as therapy is a personal and individual process. The number of sessions depends on what you are bringing to therapy, what you hope to gain, and how you experience the work.

Some people find it helpful to attend a few sessions to gain clarity and understanding, while others choose to work in therapy for longer to explore deeper patterns and experiences.

If you are considering time-limited therapy, this may sometimes be around 8–12 sessions, although this can vary. We can review how therapy is going together and decide what feels most helpful for you.
